Davy Jones’ Locker

In honour of David Bowie’s own songwriting style, using the cut-up technique developed by Brion Gysin and William Burroughs, every line of every song on every David Bowie studio album has been thrown into my own version of Bowie’s Verbasizer (an Excel spreadsheet) from which lines have been chosen, usually at random, and “remixed” to form new text. Arguably, these might be considered “poems”. No alteration has been made to the original text, other than to add or remove, in a few cases, extraneous punctuation. It is hoped that the reader gathers a new appreciation for the innate poetics of Bowie’s lyrics.

The songs and lyrics of David Bowie are copyrighted and owned by the Estate of David Bowie and the Warner Music Group; permission has not been sought to reproduce them on the page in this way. This is a creative act of ‘fan fiction’, with no monetary gain, citing fair use of copyrighted lyrics.
